A lottery ticket with the prize money of $3.7 million was sold in Denver. To the surprise of many, the real prize winner is yet to stand up and claim the prize money. The winning ticket was sold at a convenience store, 7-Eleven located at 4085 E at Mississippi Avenue.

As per the news release of Colorado Lottery, it was on Saturday that the ticket matched all the six digits of the jackpot drawing. The winner with the ticket number of 5-6-12-25-27-37 has time until March 24, 2012 to collect the prize money of $1.85 million. The store who sold this unclaimed lottery jackpot will also receive $5000 dollars for selling the ticket.

Since the launch of Lotto games in the year 1989, about 380 people approximately have become millionaires, given the fact that the probability of getting the jackpot is about 1 in 5.25 million in total. However, this is not the first instance of a prize winner not turning up to collect his or her winning amount.

The problem of unclaimed lottery money is increasing at an alarming rate and hundreds of cases are being reported by the lottery agencies. The state agencies surely realize the need for a legislation that will enable a winner to redeem the winnings at any point of time but as per the current laws the state can utilize the lost amount for social welfare if it remains unclaimed for a longer period of time.

As per the strategy followed by popular game, agencies like Powerball, every state has its own agency that reports directly to the governing commission of the state. If there is a winning ticket then the agency determines the state from where the ticket was purchase and after that the winnings are transferred to the commission of that particular state from where the winner has to collect the same. If the winner does not come forward, these funds are turned into unclaimed money.
